“Being an “atheist” is not a simple matter. When Derrida says that there are “theological prejudices” imbedded in “metaphysics in its entirety, even when it professes to be atheistic”, he means that when metaphysics poses as the supreme authority that pronounces “there is no God,” it simply reenacts the role of God. It leaves the “center” standing and reoccupies it with other metaphysical pretenders to the throne: Man, History, Science, Reason, any version of Žižek’s “Big Other.” That is nothing more than a palace coup that leaves the palace system standing. Such atheism, which a lot of us would call “modernist,” Watkin says, “imitates” theism and is “parasitic” on the very framework it purports to negate. Atheism, he argues, is “difficult,” a difficulty Nietzsche proposed to meet when he said “God is dead,” where “God” meant not just the Deity but the whole system of “values,” of “truth” and the “good,” from Plato to the present, every attempt to establish a center, a foundation of knowledge and morals, including modern physics, which is also an “interpretation.” Watkin thinks this atheism is exposed to a “difficulty” of its own, which he calls its “ascetic” approach, because it calls upon us to make do with the resulting debris or “residue” of lost foundations (the “death of God”), to live with finitude and imperfection, giving up on a satisfying transcendence and putting up with an unsatisfying immanence … It does not really annul the place of God but merely leaves it empty … like Camus’ “absurd man” shaking his fist at the void. I’m not a preachy vegetarian, but I am a preachy environmentalist. Cutting back on meat (or cutting it out completely) is one really easy way to help the environment.

one of the biggest misconceptions the environmental movement has been this idea that people’s individual choices can actually “help the environment”. while humans are responsible for environmental/climate decay, its not about our choices but the entire society we live in and how it functions. this is more about “how the meat industry is affecting the planet”, there’s nothing environmentally destructive about meat eating in itself. its capitalism that destroys our environment, and until that system is destroyed or replaced we cant hold ppl (consumers) responsible for environmental issues bc we’re living in a capitalist society and there’s no way to be outside of that. instead of telling ppl to drive less or ride a bike instead to cut down on fuel emissions we should be talking about why gas/oil companies and multi-national mining corporations are continuing to destroy our planet, commit genocide and countless other human rights violations via imperialism and war all in the name of profit. humans are not capable of collectively choosing to life a more “green” lifestyle in a way that has any relevance, what we choose to consume or not consume is of no threat to capitalism. being vegan/vegetarian does nothing to help the environment. its just a lifestyle choice.

“Dear english speaking friends around the world, Brazil needs your help. Maybe some of you noticed an intense brazilian activity on facebook, posts with images and long texts about the protests, or maybe not. This morning though, the New York Times wrote about it, and that’s very good (also, the fb page World Riots 24/h talked about it a few days ago). But the problem is that this article is very very mild about what is really happening in São Paulo. I wrote this to help you understand what’s going on here.
I haven’t been to the protests yet for some reasons, but many of my friends (real world friends, not just-on-facebook friends) have been there, and it was really sad and revolting to read their texts tonight, about what’s really happening…
The NY Times doesn’t say that THE POLICE is not only starting the violence against peaceful citizens who want to protest the bus fees (and they have the right to, according to our constitution), but they’re also brutalizing people who have nothing to do with the protests: old ladies, college kids, workers. People who happened to be there, going home from work or from school were, for no reason at all, attacked with tear gas and rubber bullets. The police attacked journalists, students, ordinary citizens who were just passing by. They closed a subway station and threw tear gas bombs on the inside, so even people who were on a train, going home, were attacked. They also fired tear gas and rubber bullets on people while they were shouting “NO VIOLENCE, NO VIOLENCE”. They fired against people on their knees, or lying on the ground with their hands on their heads. Some of them also put fire on trash bags and tires; at least one of them (the one who happened to be filmed while doing it) broke the windows of his own car. If they could make believe, through the media, that the protesters did it, they can also say they “just defended themselves”.
We are living in a city where the police acts without identification and under the orders of the state governor and the consent of the city mayor. And our news papers and TV networks are not telling the truth about it either. I wrote this in order to ask you for your help: help the world to know what is happening in Brazil, help the world to see how our police is acting against the people, and how our government doesn’t represent us anymore!”

In a landmark ruling, Sweden’s data protection authority (the Swedish Data Inspection Board) this week issued a decision that prohibits the nation’s public sector bodies from using the cloud service Google Apps.

The ruling – which bans Google cloud products such as calendar services, email and data processing functions – is based on inadequacies in the Google contract.
